Now there is only this peculiar distance

Merry Christmas, I suppose. It is strange how the year can arrive at its ending with all its little rituals intact, the streets dressed in lights, the windows glowing gold against the evening, the same songs returning as though nothing at all has changed, while somehow everything between two people can become unrecognisable in the space of a few quiet months. Christmas has always had a way of making absence feel louder, of placing a little more tenderness around the things we have already lost, and perhaps that is why I find myself thinking of you now, when I would much rather be thinking of anything else. I remember when this season meant messages sent too early, conversations that lasted too long, plans made without having to ask whether there would still be an us by the time December came around.

I bet on
losing dog

by MitskiIt is my first Christmas without you around, and I think that is what makes everything feel slightly out of place. The lights are still up, the songs are still playing, everyone is still making plans and wishing each other well, but there is an odd little emptiness where you used to be, as though Christmas itself has noticed that someone is missing.

Last CHRISTMAS

by Wham!I pulled the car over when the rain became too heavy to see through, the windshield turning into a blur of silver under the streetlights. Water drummed relentlessly against the roof, streaming down the windows in crooked little rivers while headlights slipped past like distant ghosts.

Starting
over again

by Natalie ColeIt is a strange thing, missing someone during a season that insists on being happy. I hope you are somewhere warm tonight, having a good Christmas, and perhaps thinking of me too, even if only for a moment. Merry Christmas, wherever you are.

For once, there was nowhere to go, nothing to do but sit there and listen.
